When you sync your iPod/iPhone in iTunes 9 and you’ve got space left, check off the “Automatically fill free space with songs” box on the Music tab to use every last free megabyte. As David Chartier at The Finer Things in Mac site notes, there’s no way to see what songs iTunes pulls and adds there for you. I’d like to think it uses some sort of smarts to determine what songs you haven’t synced that you should have. Either way, nifty feature for quickly filling up your player without having to check off playlists manually.

Not good for iPhone, you can reach the moment you cannot install some app due to lack of free space…

I had exactly the same thought as Fran. I was going to turn this feature on a little while back, but then worried about how I’d take photo’s or video if the memory was full.
It’s a shame as this would be a good way to get me to sample more of my library from time to time.
Maybe it could be marked as discardable, and garbage collected when real need for memory comes along.

I built playlist for myself that gives me 350 of the the highest-rated, least skipped, least recently played songs. That way I have more than enough music for the day, and I don’t here one song so often that I get sick of it.
