Better Gmail 2 Gets Unread Message Favicon (and Cleaned Up)

February 27, 2009

Show Unread Count in Favicon Minutes ago I posted an update to the Better Gmail 2 Firefox extension, which adds all sorts of functionality to Gmail. Since Gmail Labs launched, there's been less of a need for Better Gmail 2 features--so this revision clears out a lot of redundant stuff and pares things down to the items Google doesn't offer (yet?).

DownloadMy favorite addition to this new version 0.7.3 is the awesome Unread Message Count in Favicon script, which adds that helpful little red unread message count to your Gmail tab's favicon (shown above). Note: A similar script which includes chat alerts is Gmail FavIcon Alerts, which I'll try to get permission to include in future Better Gmail 2 versions.

Download the latest version of the extension using the button here, or hit the homepage to see the changelog for the nuts and bolts of what was added, removed, and updated.

i just wanted to confirm that this is working perfectly even though I am using the Faviconize Tab extension (which minimizes all my tabs to just their favicons). Great work, Gina, as always.

Fantastic, I didn’t even think about how useful that unread count would be for Faviconize Tab users. Thanks Eric for the confirmation.

Thanks for the extension. Also a chance to say thanks for your books too, I bought “Upgrade your Life” from Amazon a couple of weeks ago.

Great improvements – I’ve already started to rely on the favicons. With a little time, they’ll probably turn into one of those features I can’t live without.

Awesome, I’ll play around with the various features soon enough. Thanks for time and effort put into this project. :) Cheers!

Label hierarchy has completely disappeared and reverted to a long list. There is a favicon on the tab, but the message summary is now truncated mid-word by a much bigger blank margin on the right with an attachment icon happy in its vastly enlarged space. Changed the theme to see if that was problem with folders, but not change. Any ideas on getting the hierarchy back…the biggest problem in this upgrade for me.

Not quite such a good response over at Lifehacker and the Mozilla Add-Ons page for BG2 2.073. Key issue for most (me included) is the destruction Folders4Gmail and the inability to (a) downgrade to an older release or (b) use the Greasmonkey script on its own. The new release of BGmail2 seems to have killed Folders4Gmail completely. Hope you can help.

Hi all-I’m aware of the problem and working on a fix tonight. Thanks for your patience!

Smashing. I don’t know if you have but I think it would be very helpful for someone to put something out on LH or MoazillaAdd-Ons to that effect.

When will you be updating Better gReader and bring back the Mac style skin?
