Pin Tabs in Chrome ala Firefox’s FaviconizeTab

Google Chrome pinned tabs Googler Matt Cutts tweeted a Chrome tip a few days ago that made me switch from the stable build to the developer version of Google Chrome. In it you can right-click on a tab and choose "Pin tab" from the menu. Like Firefox's FaviconizeTab extension (a favorite when combined with Better Gmail 2 and the PermaTabs extensions), that option shrinks a tab down to only its favicon and sends it to the far left, which saves you tab bar real estate. Note that pinned tabs do not persist between Chrome sessions.

Now that I've been spending a lot of time in Google Wave, I'm spending a lot more time in Chrome (because, you know, I don't use enough Google products). I miss my Firefox extensions, but in Chrome's dev version there appears to be extension support. Guess I should look into porting Better Gmail 2 and friends. In the meantime you can get early access to the developer version of Chrome here. (Thanks to Matt for the nudge to transition to Chrome's dev channel.)

I just moved the dev version of chrome. But using the pintab I dont see the option of my unread email and also if some one pings me. So it would be a good idea to port better gmail2 to chrome

Just to give some ideas, here is my extension list for Chrome:

Adsweep
AdBlock+ (Not: not Adblock Plus from Fx)
RSS Subscriptions (Looks for RSS Feeds)
Session Saver
Web of Trust

Okay, does this work on Chrome for Mac? It’s not giving me that option. Thanks for sharing. :)

This does not yet work on Chrome for Mac.

Hm, the pinned tabs persists for me when I restart Chrome. I’m using the Linux build though.

Porting Better Gmail and some of your other apps to Chrome would make me (and many others!) a happy, more productive person!

I modified the Google Reader unread favicon count thingy to work with Wave:

This should work with Google Chrome, but I haven’t had a chance to test it yet.

Yup, Chrome Dev does support extensions, they even redid the chrome://extensions/ manager page recently. Hit up http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/extensions/samples for a sample gmail checker among others.

Been using the Chrome dev version for awhile now. The main dev feature I like is the ability to synchronize your bookmarks over multiple installations on different computers using your google account.

Anyways thanks for the tip with the “pin tabs”…

I’ve just started using Chrome for the Mac now and I wouldn’t mind seeing your Better extensions in Chrome either. Would be pretty awesome if it is even possible.
