Apple Blocks Official Google Voice App, Pulls GV Mobile from App Store

July 27, 2009

TechCrunch got this headline just right: Apple Is Growing Rotten To The Core: Official Google Voice App Blocked From App Store. The second half was originally "and It's Likely AT&T's Fault." Apple's withheld approval of the official Google Voice application and pulled the unofficial GV Mobile app on the grounds that they "duplicate iPhone functionality." If TechCrunch is right, once the AT&T exclusive deal is done, this will likely change. Until then, as more Google Voice invites go out, Android, BlackBerry, and even Palm and Windows Mobile are looking like much more useful (read: open) mobile platforms.

Shame on Apple. I’m extremely disappointed in them. And when is AT&T’s exclusivity deal over?

And who would have thought Windows Mobile (and by extension, Microsoft) would be called more open. I’m more than a little disgusted with Apple now. I can’t wait until AT&T’s exclusivity is up.

What pains me is that people seem to love Apple products because they are “new” or “hip” or somehow are just arbitrarily “better”. And yet everyone hates AT&T’s service and now this. Not that I need it but this is just one more reason why I won’t be buying an iPhone.

Interestingly, both John Gruber and Om Malik think this has nothing to do with AT&T at all. Hmph.

Dont worry guys! GV mobile is available on Cydia as of today.

Good work Sean Kovacs!! Enough of Apple Parenting on the apps…

Hail Jail breaking!!

Yes, the GV Mobile app is available in Cydia. Very nice indeed.

My wife will still always love her iPhone (although I might have to jailbreak it now), but I am growing interested in a non-cell phone Android device that I could convert into a WiFi phone using GV, Gizmo5 and a VOIP app. The Creative Zii looks like it for me, if it is not vaporware.

I don’t blame Apple for this one, chances are AT&T ‘made them do it’…I’m sure when Apple releases the iPhone to the other providers the application will be available
