What’s changed is that “blogging as we knew it” is no longer the easiest way to express oneself online, so it is not the choice for the most casual users. You have to be a bit more dedicated to blog than to tweet or post on [Facebook] now and then.
Indie personal bloggers are much fewer and far between then back in Blogger’s heyday. That means people who are doing it are more dedicated to personal publishing than ever, and that there’s the first ingredient of a great blog.

With nearly all blogging/journaling online services featuring automatic linkinkg and embedding, I’ve noticed a trend towards less and less original user content, more and more content created/generated by others and linked or embedded within blog/journal posts and comments. I do this sometimes, too. It’s hard not to, given how easy linking and embedding is made by online services.
As a self-imposed discipline to focus on my own created content instead of linking-to or embedding content created by others, I keep my own personal journal plain-text only, using preformat tags. http://rbigelo.sdf.org/
I LOVE the title, “Team Plan Text” but because the term was coined by yourself, it is not for me to use. It’s titled, “The TTY Guy” based upon my first experiences in computing and networking using a TTY terminal connected to a mini-computer.
