Generally I find “distraction-free text editors” precious and unnecessary, but iA Writer is changing my mind. The typography and the sentence-by-sentence focus are fantastic. “Reading time” is interesting. I have mixed feelings about using Markdown in my text files—I platform-hop, and Markdown just doesn’t look great in editors which don’t support it—but otherwise enjoying iA Writer for drafting blog posts, cheat sheets, and notes to self on the Mac. It’s 18 bucks in the Mac App Store.

I was also very wary of these distraction-free fad, but I must say that Byword caught my attention, and it’s now my Mac editor of choice. It’s something like 5 dollars at the app store, and it has a -to me at least- more advanced take on the focus feature.
On my iPad, though, I use iA Writer.

Hi Gina. 🙂 I do most of my writing in plain text. My current favorite text editors are, vim with ispell and OmniOutliner (for which there is an iPad app).
How useful do you find the iPad for generating content? If it’s useful, I’d like to consider one for myself along with a bluetooth keyboard, mighty mouse and the iSSH app.
Thanks! =)

Gina, if not markdown, what do you use for marking up text?
